In a recent crackdown, Turkish law enforcement has apprehended 47 individuals during coordinated operations targeting gay bars and residences of LGBTQ+ activists. The raids unfolded across 12 provinces over the weekend as part of a government initiative known as “My Family is Safe,” which officials claim is aimed at safeguarding family values.
Among the organizations affected by these actions is Kaos GL, an LGBTQ+ advocacy group. In Turkey, same-sex marriage remains unrecognized, and LGBTQ+ individuals face escalating discrimination. Human rights advocates assert that this operation is part of a broader strategy by the government to suppress the LGBTQ+ community.
Details of the Raids
According to reports from the Istanbul chief prosecutor’s office, authorities detained 26 individuals during the raids, which also resulted in the confiscation of illegal substances, digital devices, unauthorized alcohol, and a firearm. Furthermore, the Ankara chief prosecutor’s office reported an additional 21 arrests linked to an investigation involving Kaos GL.
Kaos GL stated that around 50 activists were detained, with over 10 arrests occurring during police searches of their homes. The organization also revealed that several websites and social media accounts belonging to LGBTQ+ groups had been blocked by the authorities.
Government’s Justification and Community Response
Authorities have accused Kaos GL of disseminating “obscene” content online accessible to minors and have sought the closure of their X account along with those of about 15 other LGBTQ+ organizations. Although same-sex relationships are not criminalized in Turkey, widespread homophobia persists, with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan labeling LGBTQ+ individuals as “perverts” and blaming them for declining birth rates.
Justice Minister Akin Gurlek announced that legal actions had commenced against over 160 individuals and various organizations as part of the “Decade of the Family” campaign. While he did not disclose the total number of arrests, he emphasized that the operations were conducted under the auspices of this broader initiative.
Concerns from Human Rights Advocates
The Turkish Human Rights Association has criticized the government’s actions, arguing that the “My Family is Safe” campaign serves as a pretext for targeting the LGBTQ+ community. They contend that the operation should not be viewed as a protective measure but rather as a systematic effort to instill fear and dismantle civil society rights.
In a statement shared on X, the association expressed, “The real name of this operation is not ‘My Family is Safe’; it is state-led discrimination, politics of fear, and the dismantling of civil society.” This sentiment underscores the ongoing tensions and challenges faced by LGBTQ+ individuals in Turkey amidst a backdrop of increasing governmental repression.
