In a significant overnight drone assault attributed to Ukraine, two individuals have lost their lives and six others have sustained injuries in the Moscow region, as reported by Governor Andrei Vorobyev.
Vorobyev disclosed that a total of 249 drones were intercepted during the attack, which also resulted in fires breaking out in various residential buildings. Additionally, a local warehouse suffered damage due to the flames.
Impact on Moscow and Surrounding Areas
The drone strikes caused notable damage in the capital city as well, with an oil refinery sustaining injuries and flight operations at two major airports being restricted. Vorobyev revealed the tragic death of a 44-year-old woman in Sofyino after a drone struck her three-storey apartment block, injuring five others, including two children.
In a separate incident in the Orekhovo-Zuevo district, an elderly man perished when a drone hit his private residence, according to the regional governor. Videos surfaced on social media reportedly depicting explosions lighting up the night sky in the Moscow vicinity and showcasing the burning warehouse, although these clips have not been independently verified.
Response from Authorities and Ongoing Strikes
Moscow’s Mayor, Sergei Sobyanin, confirmed that a drone had impacted a structure near a prominent boulevard and that damage occurred at an oil refinery facility. He stated on his social media that 450 drones targeting Moscow were neutralized in what he described as an “unprecedented attack.” Sheremetyevo, Moscow’s largest airport, alerted travelers about “temporary restrictions,” while operations at Vnukovo airport were completely suspended.
On the Ukrainian side, the conflict is also escalating, with reports of a mother and her two young children being killed during a Russian attack in the city of Fastiv, as stated by Tymur Tkachenko, the head of the Kyiv region. Furthermore, in the northeastern Sumy region, a Russian drone strike resulted in the deaths of four individuals who were traveling in a vehicle, according to local leader Oleh Hryhorov.
This recent incident marks a continuation of the intensified hostilities between Russia and Ukraine, which have been targeting critical energy and transportation infrastructures as well as major logistical centers since the onset of the full-scale invasion by Russian President Vladimir Putin in February 2022.
