The Group of Seven (G7) countries have issued a strong call for Iran to cease its military support for the Houthi rebels in Yemen. This demand comes in a joint statement from the foreign ministers of the G7 nations as the United Nations General Assembly convenes in New York.
International Concerns Over Regional Security
The G7’s statement not only urged Iran to stop arming the Houthis but also condemned the group’s recent attacks on Saudi Arabia. These actions have raised significant concerns about the potential threats to both regional stability and global energy security. The conflict has intensified, leading to thousands of refugees fleeing Yemen, particularly from areas along the Red Sea coast seized by the Houthis.
Highlighting the strategic importance of the Bab al-Mandab Strait, a crucial maritime route, the G7 ministers emphasized the need for the Houthis to cease military operations and threats to civilian shipping immediately. They called for a return to the political negotiation table to resolve the ongoing crisis.
Support for Yemen’s Legitimate Government
Reaffirming their commitment to Yemen’s legitimate government, the G7 ministers expressed strong support for the country’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity. Their statement was released during a meeting on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, reiterating the international community’s stance on the conflict.
Amid the escalating violence, reports have emerged of Saudi airstrikes in Yemen, particularly in the city of Mokha, resulting in civilian casualties. The Houthis have also increased their offensive, launching drones and missiles at Saudi targets, including Riyadh.

In response to the situation, the United Kingdom has pledged defensive support to Saudi Arabia, providing air-to-air refueling services. French authorities have also indicated their readiness to assist in securing Saudi energy infrastructure through defensive measures.
