Last month, an Estonian defence company based in Tallinn became the victim of an arson incident, an act that the Estonian government attributes to Russian interference. According to Prime Minister Kristen Michal, the attack was orchestrated by Russian special services, although further details were not disclosed.
Allegations of Russian Sabotage
The company targeted, Milrem Robotics, is known for supplying Ukraine with unmanned military vehicles. This incident is part of a broader pattern of alleged sabotage by Russia against NATO countries, which have been supporting Ukraine since Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022.
Russia has categorically denied these accusations, including the latest from Estonia. However, European Union countries have rallied behind Estonia, emphasizing that such aggressive actions will not deter their support for Ukraine.
Details of the Attack and Arrests
Estonian authorities have reported that the arson attack took place during the night of August 14-15. Based on findings from the Internal Security Service, Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna confirmed the attack as a deliberate act of sabotage by Russian special services.
Security chief Margo Palloson stated that Russia is continuously seeking opportunities to carry out such acts, although this was the first successful attack attributed to them this year. Three suspects, identified as Latvians residing in Russia, have been arrested and extradited to Estonia in connection with the incident.
International Reactions
French President Emmanuel Macron has voiced concern over this development, describing it as a dangerous escalation by Russia. He cited other incidents, such as the discovery of an explosive-laden drone near Ukrainian cargo planes at Leipzig airport, as part of a broader campaign of hostility.
Both the European Union and NATO have reaffirmed their commitment to supporting Ukraine. NATO chief Mark Rutte criticized Russia’s actions, stating that they are failing both on the battlefield and in their attempts to undermine Western unity.
