In an extraordinary display of stamina and determination, Nigerian dancer Benjamin Daniel, popularly known as “Ben Dancer,” has finished a grueling 168-hour dance marathon in Lagos, aiming to set a new world record. With the current Guinness World Record standing at 127 hours, Daniel sought to surpass this by dancing non-stop for seven days.
Support and Determination at Freedom Park
Throughout the week-long endeavor, Daniel was supported by friends and fans who gathered at Freedom Park in Lagos. Despite reaching his target at approximately 03:00 local time, he continued to dance for an additional nine hours, ultimately concluding at midday. Following this physically taxing feat, Daniel sought medical attention to ensure his well-being.
Guinness World Records has acknowledged receipt of Daniel’s application for the title. A spokesperson confirmed that his submission is active and will undergo a thorough review and verification process before any official recognition is granted.
Celebration and Cultural Expression
Daniel’s remarkable challenge was live-streamed on social media, attracting a significant audience both online and at the venue. Young spectators cheered him on, capturing his moves and joining in the dance from behind barriers. Uche Anumudu, an attendee, expressed pride in Daniel’s accomplishment, highlighting the emotional impact of witnessing such a feat.
In a tribute to Nigeria’s cultural richness, Ben Dancer incorporated various dance styles, including Afrobeats, fuji, jazz, and zouk. His performance also featured traditional attire such as the agbada and dashiki, reflecting the country’s diverse heritage.
Preparation and Community Engagement
Prior to the attempt, Daniel underwent rigorous fitness training, adjusting his diet to focus on carbohydrates and cardiovascular conditioning. During the marathon, he adhered to strict guidelines, allowing for minimal rest and maintaining hydration and nutrition.
The atmosphere at Freedom Park evolved into a festive street party, with videos of the event gaining widespread attention on social media. Supporters like Moronumubo Akodu and Emmanuel Ulelu were both impressed and concerned by the physical demands of the challenge, noting Daniel’s resilience and energy.
Nigeria’s Passion for World Records
Nigeria has developed a notable enthusiasm for setting world records, particularly in entertainment. This trend was invigorated by chef Hilda Baci’s 2023 cooking marathon, which set a new record and inspired numerous Nigerians to pursue their own record-breaking ambitions.
Guinness World Records reported a surge in applications from Nigeria, with over 1,500 submissions in two months following Baci’s achievement. This wave of interest reflects the country’s growing passion for pushing boundaries and achieving remarkable feats.
