A tragic helicopter crash in rural Marondera, Zimbabwe, claimed the lives of prominent businessman Wicknell Chivayo and his wife, Lucy Muteke, along with four others on board. The crash occurred on Wednesday evening, approximately 70 kilometers east of Harare. The family has confirmed the devastating news, expressing their deep sorrow over the incident.

Details of the Crash

The helicopter, which was traveling from Gandami in Chikomba where Chivayo and his wife were overseeing the construction of a new home, crashed at Kudenga Farm around 5 PM local time. All six individuals aboard, including two pilots, perished in the accident. The Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC) reported that emergency services promptly arrived at the scene, but unfortunately, there were no survivors.

Police Commissioner Paul Nyathi announced that investigations into the cause of the crash are ongoing. Despite the tragic loss, the authorities have yet to release the identities of the other passengers.

Chivayo’s Legacy and Influence

Wicknell Chivayo, known for his extravagant lifestyle and significant influence, was the managing director of Intratrek Zimbabwe. He gained a high profile through substantial government contracts and vibrant social media presence. Among his notable projects was a $172 million solar power initiative in Gwanda, which was awarded by the Zimbabwe Power Company but later embroiled in legal challenges.

Chivayo faced scrutiny over his business dealings, particularly regarding the materials procurement for Zimbabwe’s controversial 2023 elections. However, the country’s anti-corruption commission concluded its investigation in 2025, finding no evidence of wrongdoing.

International Connections and Philanthropy

Chivayo was affectionately known as “Sir Wicknell,” a title he used frequently despite not holding an official knighthood. His philanthropic endeavors included gifting luxury cars and large sums of money to various public figures, often sharing these acts on social media.

His influence extended beyond Zimbabwe, with connections to several African leaders. Kenyan President William Ruto, who had appeared publicly with Chivayo, expressed condolences, remembering him as a “dear friend” and a visionary for Africa’s potential. Chivayo was known for his publicized meetings with leaders from Zambia, South Africa, Tanzania, and Eswatini.
