Stellantis India has recently unveiled plans for a significant product rollout, which will include a total of seven models from Citroen and five from Jeep over the next four years. Although the company has not revealed the specifics of these models, it has confirmed the introduction of a premium pickup, which is anticipated to be the Jeep Gladiator.
The Gladiator is expected to be one of the first models to arrive in the Indian market. Reports suggest that Stellantis will import the vehicle as a completely knocked down (CKD) kit, similar to its current approach with the Grand Cherokee and Wrangler, both of which share the Gladiator’s platform.
Anticipated Features and Specifications
The Gladiator is projected to enter the premium pickup segment in India. Currently, the vehicle is equipped with a 3.6-litre V6 petrol engine, which may also be the choice for the Indian variant. As is typical for Jeep vehicles, a 4×4 drivetrain is likely to accompany this engine option.
Alternatively, given the shared platform with the Wrangler, Jeep could opt to use the Wrangler’s 2.0-litre direct-injection turbo-petrol engine for the Gladiator in the Indian market. In the USA, both the Gladiator and the four-door Wrangler are priced similarly, suggesting the Indian pricing for the Gladiator could hover around the Rs 70 lakh mark.
Market Position and Sales Expectations
This price point places the Gladiator significantly above competitors like the Toyota Hilux; however, the Gladiator is larger, measuring over 5.5 meters compared to the Hilux’s length of just over 5.3 meters. While the lifestyle pickup market in India remains relatively niche, recent launches such as the Toyota Hilux and the ongoing sales of the Isuzu D-Max V-Cross indicate growing interest. Additionally, Mahindra has introduced its Scorpio Lifestyler, further contributing to the segment’s appeal.
Given its positioning in a higher segment of the market, sales for the Gladiator are expected to be modest. Furthermore, Stellantis recognizes the need to enhance its sales and service network, a process that is reportedly already in motion. The company has stated that its Stellantis Brand House format will facilitate expansion into Tier 2 and Tier 3/4 markets, where it identifies potential for growth.
