The Tata Sierra EV marks the brand’s second foray into the all-electric SUV segment, featuring a dual-motor all-wheel-drive (AWD) configuration. Positioned beneath the Harrier EV, which also offers an AWD variant, both vehicles are equipped with a 75kWh battery pack and share similar motor specifications. They are both touted to achieve an ARAI range exceeding 600 kilometers, but given the Sierra EV’s smaller and lighter design, the question arises: does it provide superior real-world range? A thorough comparison has been conducted to determine this.
Specifications and Pricing of Tata Sierra EV AWD and Harrier EV AWD
Both SUVs utilize the same 75kWh battery, yet the Harrier EV AWD boasts a slight edge in power output, generating 7 horsepower more than its Sierra counterpart. Despite this difference, both models deliver a torque output of 504Nm. Notably, the Sierra EV AWD weighs 205 kilograms less than the Harrier EV AWD, which could significantly impact its overall performance.
In terms of charging capabilities, both vehicles support AC charging with a 7.2kW charger. The Sierra EV AWD requires approximately 10.5 hours for a full charge, while the Harrier EV AWD takes slightly longer at 10.7 hours. Additionally, both models are compatible with DC fast charging, allowing for a quick recharge of 20-30% in under 30 minutes. Pricing also plays a crucial role; the Sierra EV AWD is priced Rs 80,000 lower than the starting price of the Harrier EV AWD, with the top-end Harrier EV AWD retailing at Rs 29.29 lakh, which is Rs 3.30 lakh more than the sole variant of the Sierra EV AWD.
Real-World Range Comparison
While the ARAI figures suggest that the Tata Sierra EV AWD has a range of 624 kilometers—just 2 kilometers ahead of the Harrier EV AWD—in practical testing, the Sierra EV AWD has demonstrated a superior average range. During real-world assessments, the Sierra EV AWD managed an average distance of 438 kilometers, outpacing the Harrier EV AWD by 37 kilometers.
In urban driving conditions, the Sierra EV AWD achieved an efficiency rating of 5.83 kilometers per kWh, surpassing the Harrier EV AWD’s 5.45 kilometers per kWh, which translates to a 30-kilometer advantage in range. On highway journeys, the performance gap widened, with the Sierra EV AWD achieving 5.82 kilometers per kWh, compared to the Harrier EV AWD’s 5.24 kilometers per kWh, allowing it to extend its range by an additional 44 kilometers. This advantage is likely attributed to the Sierra EV AWD’s lighter weight, which plays a crucial role in its overall efficiency.
Testing Methodology for Real-World Range
The range testing was conducted by Autocar India, beginning with fully charged batteries and tire pressures adjusted according to manufacturer guidelines. The vehicles were driven on a predetermined loop encompassing both city and highway segments at consistent average speeds. The calculated range was based on the percentage of battery charge consumed during the test. To simulate typical usage conditions, the air conditioning was set to 22°C in auto mode, and other features such as the audio system, lights, and ventilated seats were utilized as needed. This approach ensures that the tests are reliable and reflective of everyday usage scenarios.
