Exploring the Accuracy and Limitations of World Maps
The UN has endorsed the Equal Earth map to replace the Mercator projection, aiming for a more accurate depiction of continents like Africa. While the Mercator map is ideal for navigation, it distorts landmass sizes, influencing perceptions of importance. The Equal Earth map corrects these size inaccuracies but sacrifices navigational precision. Other projections, such as the Peters map, address different map distortions, but no single map can perfectly represent a spherical world on a flat surface.
