Recent hostilities in Yemen have resulted in the deaths of more than 60 individuals, including civilians, as reported by military and medical sources. This surge in violence involved confrontations between the Saudi-backed government forces and the Houthi rebels, primarily occurring in the southwest region of the country.
The escalation comes following some of the most intense fighting seen in years, which erupted after the breakdown of a ceasefire that had been in place since 2022. The clashes are centered around a strategic passage to the Red Sea, highlighting the ongoing conflict’s significance in the region.
Military sources from Yemen indicate that 26 soldiers aligned with the government were killed during several hours of combat. Meanwhile, Houthi sources claim that 31 of their fighters also lost their lives. Additionally, a missile strike in the government-controlled city of Taiz reportedly killed six civilians who were traveling on a bus, leaving seven others injured. A government official attributed this attack to the Houthis, who are striving to expand their control in the area.

In Taiz, a military officer remarked that the situation is critical, with the coming hours expected to be pivotal as the Houthis have recently captured strategic positions near the city. Reinforcements have been dispatched from Aden in response to the Houthi offensive, which is aimed at isolating the government-held port of Mokha, currently under siege.
On the previous day, the fighting was particularly deadly, resulting in 129 fatalities according to an AFP compilation from various sources. The Bab al-Mandeb strait has become increasingly vital as a route for oil shipments from Saudi Arabia, especially following Iran’s closure of the Strait of Hormuz to commercial vessels.
