The commission established to examine the alleged negligence surrounding the murder of Mir Raza Ali expressed disappointment over the efforts of the initial investigating officer. Justice Omar Sial criticized the officer for failing to fulfill basic investigative duties and suggested that the officer was unfit for police service.
Investigation Shortcomings
Justice Sial highlighted that the first investigating officer made negligible efforts to investigate the murder. The commission noted that much of the necessary investigative work, such as collecting CCTV footage and questioning suspects, was carried out by other police officers.
The officer had only interrogated 10 out of the 33 people whose statements were recorded. Additionally, the officer kept autopsy samples in his possession for several days without following proper procedures.
Concerns Over Evidence Handling
During the investigation, it was revealed that the crime scene was not secured in a timely manner, and crucial evidence such as a bullet casing was found by another officer. The commission questioned why the investigating officer did not prepare essential documents, such as seizure and inspection memos.
Justice Sial reprimanded the officer for failing to secure the crime scene and for relying on WhatsApp to share evidence, which compromised the integrity of the investigation. The officer was accused of trying to portray the case as a suicide without sufficient evidence.
Testimonies and Further Actions
The commission plans to send questionnaires to senior police officials who were implicated in the testimony of a police surgeon. Additionally, the victim’s business partner, who had alleged having more information, was asked to meet the victim’s family and provide answers to their questions.
The commission adjourned the hearing and announced that notices would be issued to various police officers involved in the investigation to record their testimonies in the coming week.
