Sonia Gandhi has voiced concerns over the political landscape under the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), arguing that the Congress and other opposition parties have not been afforded a fair chance in the political field. In an interview with The Hindu, she expressed that the BJP’s governance over the past 12 years has caused significant harm to India’s democratic institutions.

Ongoing Political Tensions

The Congress leader highlighted ongoing protests against the Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, citing allegations of electoral irregularities and ‘vote chori’—a term referring to election rigging. These protests are part of a broader challenge to the BJP’s influence over the Election Commission and other institutions.

In July, student protests led to the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan following a scandal involving leaked NEET examination papers. These incidents underscore the growing discontent among various sectors of Indian society, according to Gandhi.

Reflections on the Emergency

Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal responded to Gandhi’s criticism by reminding her of the Emergency period in 1975 when her mother-in-law, Indira Gandhi, was Prime Minister. Meghwal claimed that during the Emergency, democracy in India was severely restricted, with many political leaders jailed and press freedoms curtailed.

Gandhi addressed these remarks by acknowledging the excesses of the Emergency period, noting that Indira Gandhi later expressed regret and called for elections in 1977, which demonstrated a commitment to democratic processes.

Congress’s Resilience

Sonia Gandhi remained optimistic about the future, stating that despite challenges, the Congress party continues to make progress. She emphasized the party’s resilience in the face of adversity and its commitment to upholding constitutional values.

Gandhi claimed that the Congress, alongside like-minded parties, is gaining ground politically and working to restore fair governance. She also dismissed the notion that the Congress could learn from the BJP’s ideological roots, instead highlighting the achievements of leaders like Dr. Manmohan Singh within her party.

BJP’s Response

The BJP has countered Gandhi’s remarks, with Union Textile Minister Giriraj Singh pointing out the Congress’s long absence from power in several states. He reiterated that the BJP has strengthened democracy during its tenure, portraying Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a leader who has nurtured the nation’s democratic spirit.

Gandhi suggested that Modi’s rise from humble beginnings has been embellished, although she acknowledged his success within the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) framework.
