The recent parliamentary elections in Russia have yielded results that align closely with forecasts, indicating that the ruling party, United Russia, will continue to dominate the legislative body.
According to Steve Rosenberg, the BBC’s Russia editor, who has been reporting from Moscow, the electoral results are largely anticipated. This election cycle comes amidst a backdrop of ongoing conflict in Ukraine, which has led to significant military casualties for Russia and ongoing economic challenges.
Notably, the elections took place without the presence of the only anti-war political party, Yabloko, which was barred from the ballot prior to the voting. Although some candidates from Yabloko did appear in select districts, their overall absence from the election underscores the constrained political landscape in the country.
