In a recent escalation of tensions, over 100 Israeli settlers have launched attacks on a Palestinian village in the West Bank, impeding a Palestinian family’s attempt to return to their homes. The family, accompanied by the Israeli military, was trying to reclaim their property in Jalud, south of Nablus, following a ruling by Israel’s High Court.
Violence Erupts in Jalud
On Monday night, settlers set fire to two homes belonging to the al-Tubasi family. The Israeli security forces present were also targeted by the settlers. According to human rights organizations, the incident highlights the ongoing issue of insufficient action by Israeli authorities against settler aggression.
Mahmoud al-Tubasi, a member of the affected family, described the ordeal as “terrifying,” expressing relief at having survived. He, his wife Aida, and their son Wael, had been forced to leave their homes earlier in the summer due to continuous settler harassment.
Failed Attempt to Reclaim Property
The al-Tubasi family returned under military escort after the court mandated their right to go back. However, upon their arrival, they found their homes extensively damaged. A video shared with the BBC depicted the destruction, with doors smashed, electrical fittings torn out, and windows broken.
Alerted through WhatsApp groups, settlers gathered in large numbers to prevent the family’s return. Despite the army’s use of tear gas, the settlers’ numbers overwhelmed the security forces, leading to further violence and destruction.
Political and Legal Repercussions
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned the attacks on security forces and urged legal action against the rioters. However, his comments at the UN General Assembly downplayed the violence, attributing it to a small group of “juvenile delinquents.”
Critics argue that the lack of law enforcement contributes to a broader strategy of displacing Palestinians and expanding Israeli settlements. The Israeli human rights group Yesh Din reports that only a small fraction of settler violence cases lead to convictions.
