Russia has unleashed an unprecedented assault on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, marking the most significant attack since the last spring season. The offensive primarily focused on Kyiv and its neighboring areas, as confirmed by Ukraine’s Prime Minister. Tragically, at least five individuals, including a child in the Kyiv region, lost their lives during the overnight strikes.
Impact on Energy and Infrastructure
The attacks severely disrupted power supplies, with thousands of homes affected. DTEK, Ukraine’s largest private energy company, reported that electricity had been restored to 8,000 households after enduring a challenging night. One of the principal targets was the Trypilska power station, a critical electricity provider for Kyiv, according to the Russian defense ministry.
Serhiy Koretskyi, a Ukrainian official, highlighted on Telegram that since summer, there has been a relentless barrage on the country’s energy systems. However, this recent coordinated assault is the first of its magnitude since the previous heating season ended. Eleven regions experienced attacks, affecting residential areas, social infrastructure, civilian enterprises, and railways.
Widespread Damage and Casualties
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reported strikes on vital infrastructure in the Zhytomyr, Mykolaiv, Kirovohrad, and Rivne regions. In Kyiv, the aftermath was marked by thick smoke and the lingering sound of explosions, with authorities advising residents to keep windows closed until the air cleared.
Among the casualties was a child found beneath the debris of a house, as reported by Timur Tkachenko, head of the Kyiv regional administration. Additionally, Mayor Vitaly Klitschko confirmed the deaths of three individuals in Kyiv, including a utility worker. Other fatalities occurred in the Mykolaiv and Sumy regions.
Military Developments
The Russian defense ministry stated it had conducted extensive operations against Ukrainian facilities, including the Trypilska thermal power plant, which it claimed powered Ukrainian defense sites. Meanwhile, Ukraine’s military reported successful strikes on Russian military targets, including a drone warehouse in the Donetsk region.
In the ongoing conflict, Ukraine’s Third Army Corps made headway by reclaiming several settlements near Lyman in Donetsk as part of a counter-offensive named Operation Vivaldi. President Zelensky visited the troops in the region, although the front line remains largely unchanged elsewhere.
