Controversy Erupts Over Winning Entry in Nikon’s Photography Competition

controversy erupts over winning entry in nikons photography competition

A prestigious scientific photography competition is currently facing scrutiny after the recent winner’s submission has been called into question due to allegations of artificial intelligence (AI) involvement. Nikon’s Small World In Motion contest, which has been held for 15 years, showcases remarkable images and videos captured through advanced microscopy techniques.

The top prize was awarded to a video created by Dr. Ning Xu from Tsinghua University in China. This entry purportedly depicts the movement of cilia, tiny hair-like structures, within the airways of a child suffering from a rare illness. Despite reaching out for a statement, Dr. Xu has not commented directly to the media but has addressed the controversy online, asserting that he adhered to the competition’s guidelines.

In a LinkedIn post responding to Nikon, Dr. Xu acknowledged that AI was utilized in the image processing stage but insisted that it was not employed to generate the video itself, nor the cilia or their movements. He explained that the vibrant colors seen in the video, a technique often used in microscopy, were achieved through traditional methods involving stains and dyes applied to the specimen.

Concerns Raised by the Scientific Community

Despite Dr. Xu’s defense, several scientists have raised concerns regarding the authenticity of the video. Critics argue that the movements depicted do not align with typical cellular behavior, and some have noted that the cilia appear unnaturally large. Edward Phelps, an associate professor at Florida University, highlighted that some structures seem to “pop in and out of existence,” while PhD student Ian Donovan from UT Southwestern Medical Center pointed out a watermark that suggested the image might have been AI-generated.

Adding to the skepticism, two former judges of the contest have expressed doubts about the legitimacy of the winning entry. They, along with other critics, worry that if the video was indeed manipulated using AI, it would undermine the integrity of the competition.

Nikon’s Response and Future Steps

Nikon has stated that Dr. Xu is cooperating with their investigation and has provided further technical documentation for review. Dr. Patrick Hickey, who placed fifth in the 2026 Small World contest, remarked on the significance of the award, suggesting that it represents more than just the monetary prize. He emphasized the importance of showcasing scientific work to the public and the artistic elements that can emerge from scientific imaging.

Hickey also expressed concern for the fairness of the competition, stating that if the winning video did, in fact, utilize generative AI, it would be unjust to other participants who followed the rules. Nikon has yet to make a definitive ruling but has indicated that they will provide updates regarding the situation soon. As of now, the company maintains that it does not believe any contest rules have been breached.
