The pilot of a Flydubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv recounted a terrifying attack in the cockpit by his co-pilot. Capt Smit Machchhar, an Indian national, shared his ordeal during a video call with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, emphasizing his resolve to save the lives of over 170 passengers on board.
Heroic Actions in the Face of Danger
Capt Machchhar described how he found himself on the floor, wounded, as the plane began to descend. Despite his injuries, he mustered the strength for one final effort to unlock the cockpit door, allowing others to enter and assist in regaining control of the aircraft.
“I was fighting for my life, but I knew I couldn’t let others die,” he explained. His determination, along with the help of passengers and crew, played a crucial role in stabilizing the situation.
Flight FZ1073’s Emergency Landing
The incident occurred two and a half hours into the flight, with the plane plummeting over 17,000 feet. An emergency signal was sent to air traffic controllers, followed by a hijacking alert.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reported that the co-pilot attacked Machchhar and attempted to crash the plane. Passengers subdued the assailant, allowing two reserve pilots to safely land the plane at Tabuk Airport in Saudi Arabia.
Ongoing Investigations and Reactions
Authorities identified the attacker as an Omani national, suspected of having undergone radical indoctrination. The United Arab Emirates is investigating any potential links to terrorism.
In India, Capt Machchhar has been lauded as a hero. Prime Minister Modi praised his bravery and quick decision-making. The Indian embassy in the UAE confirmed that Machchhar is recovering well.
Reflecting on the incident, Machchhar stated, “I see this as a journey towards recovery, and I am confident I will be fit again.”
