Seoul Issues Warning to Ukraine Over POW Controversy

seoul issues warning to ukraine over pow controversy

The tensions between South Korea and Ukraine have escalated, with Seoul issuing a stern warning to Kyiv regarding a recent prisoner-of-war incident. President Lee Jae Myung has indicated that unspecified “further action” may be taken unless Ukraine publicly apologizes for disclosing that two North Korean prisoners of war were transferred to South Korea.

This situation arose when Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky made the announcement during a speech at the United Nations General Assembly last week. The revelation was met with disapproval from South Korea, which had anticipated that the information would remain confidential.

Diplomatic Misunderstanding or Violation of Trust?

In response to the growing tensions, Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha described the incident as a “diplomatic misunderstanding” and assured that efforts were underway to resolve the issue amicably. However, President Lee dismissed this interpretation, emphasizing that the matter touches on “the dignity of the Korean people and the nation.”

Lee’s office clarified that it was Ukraine that had initially requested to keep the transfer confidential, citing concerns for the families of the North Korean soldiers and the potential backlash from not leveraging the opportunity for prisoner exchanges. However, Zelensky’s administration countered, asserting that there was no agreement to maintain secrecy about the transfer, which has further complicated the diplomatic relationship.

Domestic Criticism and Accusations

The fallout from Zelensky’s remarks has led to significant criticism of President Lee domestically. Opposition parties in South Korea have accused him of attempting to cover up the transfer to appease North Korea. The two soldiers involved had previously indicated to the press their desire to be relocated to South Korea after serving with North Korean forces in support of Russia during the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

During an interview with Ukrainian media, Foreign Minister Sybiha expressed hope for a swift resolution to the situation, underscoring the importance of South Korea as a partner. He remarked, “We are working on it. For us, South Korea is an important country. And I really hope for momentum, continuation, and concrete results that we are truly achieving with them.”

Accusations of Incitement and Ongoing Relations

In a dramatic escalation, President Lee accused Ukraine of trying to “bring war on the Korean Peninsula”. He expressed disappointment that instead of acknowledging the facts and issuing an apology, Ukraine appeared to be discussing a potential military clash between the North and South.

While South Korea has maintained a sympathetic stance towards Ukraine following Russia’s invasion, it has also upheld a long-standing policy of refraining from supplying lethal weapons to any nation engaged in ongoing military conflict. This delicate balance continues to shape the diplomatic landscape between Seoul and Kyiv.
