During a recent address in Karachi, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari revealed that the federal government had been considering enforcing either emergency measures or governor’s rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) in response to the security situation. However, he emphasized that his party, the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), favors pursuing a political resolution to effectively tackle terrorism.
Federal Government’s Stance
Bilawal highlighted that the federal authorities had been in continuous discussions with President Asif Ali Zardari and the PPP concerning the security challenges, especially in KP. He remarked that the government was fully prepared to implement constitutional measures such as emergency or governor’s rule to address the situation.
Despite these preparations, Bilawal argued that the PPP believes in seeking a political solution as a preferable approach. He expressed the party’s intent to engage with the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) about their planned protest march to Islamabad, aiming to resolve issues politically before resorting to drastic measures.
Dialogue and Political Engagement
Bilawal urged all political parties to engage in discussions with PTI, urging them to reconsider their planned long march to Islamabad. He acknowledged the impact of PTI’s protests, noting that they had effectively shut down the capital for several days, even without marching.
However, he also pointed out the ongoing terrorist activities in KP and the necessity for the provincial government to prioritize these issues. Bilawal warned that failure to address the terrorism threat might compel the federal government to consider emergency powers.
Security Concerns and International Dynamics
Bilawal emphasized the need to view terrorism as a national issue rather than a political one, noting the threats emanating from Afghanistan and what he described as India’s involvement. He called for a unified approach to combat terrorism, highlighting recent meetings between Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and President Zardari as steps toward national cooperation.
He also proposed a written agreement between the KP and federal governments to outline their collaborative efforts in fighting terrorism. Bilawal stressed that political disagreements should not overshadow national security concerns.
Water Projects for Karachi
In another part of his speech, Bilawal announced the completion of a significant water treatment project in Karachi, aimed at addressing the city’s water needs. He outlined the PPP’s plans to enhance water supply to various areas, including SITE and Kemari, through new treatment facilities.
Bilawal highlighted the importance of water management for Karachi’s development and criticized the Indus River System Authority for not adequately addressing the province’s water needs. He emphasized that the Sindh government is committed to ensuring water availability for its people.
