Authorities in the United States are currently conducting a search operation for a medical aircraft that vanished while en route to Boston, Massachusetts, early Saturday morning. This incident involves six individuals onboard the aircraft, which is a Gulfstream G-100.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reported that it lost communication with the plane shortly after 1:00 AM local time (6:00 AM GMT) and subsequently issued a search-and-rescue alert. The U.S. Coast Guard’s Northeast District has initiated both air and sea searches near the Nantucket coast, an island located off the Massachusetts shoreline.
Flight data from FlightAware indicates that the aircraft took off from L.F. Wade International Airport in Bermuda at approximately 11:40 PM local time. It was scheduled to arrive at Logan International Airport in Boston at 1:30 AM EDT (6:30 AM GMT). The tail number released by the Coast Guard identifies the aircraft as belonging to Latitude Air Ambulances, a company specializing in international medical flights for patients returning to their home locations.
Details of the Flight and Communication Issues
According to Clarence Togeretz, the director of flight operations at Latitude, the onboard crew consisted of two pilots and two medical personnel, all of whom are Canadian nationals. They had traveled to Bermuda to pick up a patient and their accompanying relative, who are not Canadian.
Data from FlightAware reveals that the aircraft experienced a significant drop in altitude before losing communication, descending from approximately 24,000 feet to 11,000 feet. Reports based on radio transmissions indicate that there were complications with communication between the pilot and air traffic control, as noted by the Boston Globe, which accessed recordings from LiveATC.net.
“Are you coming in blind? Is that what you said?” an air traffic controller asked the pilot. They inquired whether an emergency was being declared, to which the pilot’s response was not audible. The controller then noted that the pilot’s transmission was weak and sought clarification on the emergency declaration. Ultimately, it was confirmed that the pilot did declare an emergency situation.
Emergency Response Efforts
Following the communication issues, an area fire dispatcher requested emergency teams to prepare for the arrival of a plane that was experiencing an “electrical issue.” Shortly thereafter, the dispatcher updated that the aircraft had lost both radio and radar contact.
As the search and rescue efforts continue, authorities remain hopeful for a swift resolution to this distressing situation. The involvement of both air and maritime operations highlights the urgency and seriousness of the search for the missing medical plane.
