mercedes amg unveils high performance gt suv

Mercedes-Benz has introduced the AMG GT SUV, marking its first full-size SUV developed entirely in-house. This five-seat electric vehicle shares its architecture with the GT 4-Door Coupe and is available in three variants: GT 53, GT 55, and GT 63. The top-tier GT 63 version boasts an impressive 1,169 horsepower. Initially, the GT 53 will hit the market, followed by the more robust models in spring 2027.

Design and Customization Features

The AMG GT SUV spans 5,084mm in length, 2,001mm in width, and 1,656mm in height, with a wheelbase measuring 3,040mm. Its front displays the signature AMG vertical-slat grille and Mercedes star, both optionally illuminated, flanked by LED headlamps with star-shaped daytime running lights. Active slats on the front bumper open only when additional cooling is required.

The vehicle’s profile features a low-slung roofline that slopes towards the rear, accented by pronounced wheel arches, frameless side windows, and compact wing mirrors. The rear design includes six circular tail-lamps, reminiscent of the GT 4-Door Coupe, with an optional full-width light strip. The GT 55 and GT 63 models feature an active rear spoiler that adjusts its angle based on driving conditions, while the drag coefficient is rated at 0.28 for the GT 53 and 0.27 for the other variants.

Interior and Technology

Inside, the GT SUV offers a sports car-like seating position with multi-way power-adjustable front seats and a power-folding rear bench. The dashboard combines a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster with a 14-inch touchscreen angled towards the driver, plus an optional 14-inch screen for the front passenger.

The AMG Performance steering wheel includes paddles for adjusting brake regeneration levels. The interior is further enhanced by door panels with floating armrests and diamond-pattern stitching, complemented by a continuous ambient lighting strip. The MBUX infotainment system integrates AI agents like ChatGPT, Microsoft Bing, and Google Gemini, and features three AMG-specific apps for performance data, customization, and lap recording.

Powertrain and Performance

The GT 53 is equipped with two synchronous motors, delivering 544hp and 800Nm, capable of accelerating from 0 to 100kph in 4.2 seconds with a top speed of 250kph. The GT 55 and GT 63 feature three motors, with the GT 55 producing 816hp and 1,860Nm, and the GT 63 reaching 1,169hp and 2,000Nm, achieving 0-100kph in just 2.7 seconds.

Both the GT 55 and GT 63 can reach a top speed of 270kph with the optional Driver’s Package. The GT 53 offers a WLTP range of up to 668km, while the GT 55 and GT 63 can achieve up to 700km. Fast charging capabilities allow for a 10-80% charge in approximately 11-12 minutes with DC fast charging.

The SUV includes rear-wheel steering and debuts AMG’s ‘Active Ride Control+’ suspension, which uses hydraulic units instead of traditional anti-roll bars to reduce body roll and pitch. Carbon-ceramic brakes are standard on the GT 63, and various driving modes allow for personalized throttle response, cornering, and traction control settings.

Although there are no current plans announced for the AMG GT SUV’s release in India, the German automaker continues to expand its lineup with innovative electric vehicles.
