The Volkswagen Taigun, which celebrated its fifth anniversary last month following its initial release in September 2021, has officially crossed the impressive milestone of 100,000 units sold domestically. According to figures released by SIAM, the midsize SUV had recorded a total of 99,095 units sold by the end of September 2026. The additional 905 units necessary to reach the 100,000 mark were attained in the early weeks of October.
In addition to its domestic success, Volkswagen India has exported 52,751 units of the Taigun, bringing the total of combined domestic and export sales to 151,846 units. The fiscal year 2023 witnessed the highest domestic sales, with 21,736 units sold, while FY2025 marked the peak for exports at 14,903 units. A facelift version of the vehicle was launched in 2026, featuring various enhancements, including a refreshed design, new features, and an updated gearbox.
Sales Performance Over the Years
The sales data indicates that FY2023 was the most successful year for the Taigun, accounting for 53% of Volkswagen India’s passenger vehicle sales, totaling 41,326 units. However, following this peak, the demand for the model has seen a decline. In FY2024, sales dipped to 20,485 units, reflecting a 6% year-over-year decrease, and FY2025 saw a further reduction to 19,910 units, down by 3% YoY.
By FY2026, Taigun sales fell to a low of 12,912 units, marking a significant 35% decrease from the previous year. In this period, the Taigun was the second best-selling model for Volkswagen India, following the Virtus sedan, which sold 22,959 units, while the Tiguan and Tayron lagged behind with 1,126 and 238 units, respectively. Analysts suggest that the perceived positioning of the Taigun, which seems to be a notch below its main competitors in the midsize SUV segment, such as the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, and Maruti Victoris, may have contributed to the slowdown in sales.
Recent Trends and Future Outlook
In the first half of the current fiscal year, however, the Taigun has rebounded slightly, selling 7,163 units, which represents a 4% year-over-year growth compared to the same period in the previous year when 6,891 units were sold. This increase can be attributed to the introduction of the facelifted model in mid-April 2026, which brought aesthetic improvements, additional features, and a new automatic gearbox.
Developed on the MQB A0 IN platform as part of Volkswagen’s India 2.0 strategy, the Taigun is closely related to the Skoda Kushaq, which has achieved sales of 104,863 units since its launch in June 2021. As highlighted in Autocar India’s buyer’s guide for the Model Year 2026 Taigun, the updated model boasts a new look and enhanced features that address some of its earlier shortcomings. While the Taigun continues to be recognized for its solid construction and enjoyable driving experience, especially with its 1.5 TSI engine, it does face criticism for limited interior space compared to some rivals and the absence of certain desirable features.
