In a recent announcement from the International Cricket Council (ICC), Pakistan’s captain Fatima Sana has been fined 10 percent of her match fee following a breach of the ICC Code of Conduct during the Women’s Asia Cup match against India.
This incident took place during the clash between the two teams on Saturday, where Fatima dismissed Indian opener Shafali Verma and made a gesture towards the pavilion as a send-off.
According to the ICC’s media release, this action was categorized as a Level 1 breach of conduct under Article 2.5 of the ICC Code, which addresses the use of language, actions, or gestures that may disparage or provoke an aggressive response from a batter after their dismissal in an international match.
Match Overview and Impact
The match itself was heavily one-sided, with India dominating Pakistan throughout. The Pakistani team was dismissed for a mere 55 runs, marking their lowest score ever in T20 internationals, largely due to India’s exceptional spin bowling.
Despite a strong early performance from Fatima, who took three wickets and helped dismiss the Indian top order, the Women in Blue swiftly accomplished the chase.
Alongside the financial penalty, Fatima’s disciplinary record has now received an additional demerit point, bringing her total to two. Previously, she had received one demerit point for an incident during a match against Ireland in Dublin in August 2025.
Disciplinary Proceedings
Fatima acknowledged the violation and accepted the sanction proposed by Supriya Rani Das of the Emirates ICC International Panel of Match Referees, eliminating the need for a formal hearing. The charge was brought forth by the on-field umpires as well as the third and fourth umpires involved in the match.
Level 1 offences typically hold a maximum penalty of 50 percent of a player’s match fee and can result in one or two demerit points. If a player accumulates four or more demerit points within a defined period, these may convert into suspension points, potentially leading to a ban.
Pakistan is set to face Hong Kong in their next Asia Cup match in Dubai on Monday night, seeking a win to secure their place in the semi-finals.
