Google Announces Major €13 Billion Investment in Finland’s AI Infrastructure

google announces major 13 billion investment in finlands ai infrastructure

In a significant move, Google has unveiled plans to invest €13 billion in Finland, marking its largest single investment in Europe to date. This substantial funding is aimed at bolstering the nation’s artificial intelligence infrastructure, which has become increasingly vital in the tech landscape.

Part of this investment includes a long-term agreement with Finnish energy provider Fortum, wherein Google will purchase up to 50% of the electricity generated by the Loviisa nuclear power plant. This partnership is anticipated to facilitate the construction of three new data centers and the expansion of an existing facility to meet the soaring demand for AI services.

Finland’s Appeal as a Data Center Location

Finland has become a hotspot for tech companies seeking to establish data centers, attributed to its favorable conditions such as a cool climate and abundant low-carbon electricity. These environmental factors are advantageous as they reduce the energy expenditure required for cooling data facilities filled with computer servers.

Prime Minister Petteri Orpo expressed pride in the announcement, stating that Google’s decision reflects Finland’s strengths in creating a responsible AI infrastructure. Earlier this week, TikTok also revealed a $1 billion investment in Finland for a new data center, highlighting the nation’s robust digital framework and skilled workforce.

Economic Impact and Future Plans

According to Google, this investment is poised to create over 37,000 jobs during the construction phase and is projected to boost Finland’s GDP by approximately €3.6 billion annually. Construction of the data centers is expected to commence in 2027 and continue into 2028.

Additionally, the new facilities will support a range of Google services, including its AI chatbot Gemini, Search, Maps, and YouTube. Google aims to pair this expansion with energy projects and community initiatives that focus on local biodiversity, education, and workforce development.

Long-term Commitment to Clean Energy

Ruth Porat, president and chief investment officer of Alphabet and Google, emphasized the company’s dedication to growing its presence in Finland responsibly. She noted that this investment not only enhances Google’s technical infrastructure but also aligns with initiatives aimed at increasing energy capacity and improving grid efficiency.

The agreement with Fortum ensures long-term financial stability for the Loviisa nuclear facility, which currently supplies about 10% of Finland’s electricity. Fortum has indicated that Google’s commitment will support further investments to extend the plant’s operational life and enhance its output capacity.
