In a recent development involving a maritime incident in the Black Sea, human remains have been discovered on a vessel that was struck by a drone off the coast of Romania. This alarming discovery was reported by prosecutors in Bulgaria, where the ship had been taken for repairs.
Details of the Discovery
The prosecutor’s office in Varna, a city in eastern Bulgaria, released a statement confirming the grim find. “During debris-clearing operations, severely damaged human remains were discovered,” the statement noted. Due to the condition of the remains, determining the exact number of victims is currently not possible.
DNA testing has been ordered to assist in identifying the deceased. Although the name of the vessel was not disclosed, it was revealed that the ship was registered under the San Marino flag, similar to the Wine Trader, a chemical tanker that was hit on October 15. This incident occurred approximately 24 kilometers southeast of Sulina, near the Danube’s mouth.
Impact of the Drone Strike
A Bulgarian law enforcement source, speaking to Agence France Presse (AFP), indicated that there were likely six victims. The attack had left seven out of the 12 crew members missing, while five others were rescued from the disaster.
This incident is part of a series of drone strikes in the region. Since early October, at least nine merchant ships have been targeted by drones along the Romanian and Bulgarian Black Sea coasts. These attacks have resulted in a tragic toll, with 34 individuals dead or missing.
Ongoing Concerns
The series of drone attacks has raised significant concerns about maritime safety in the Black Sea region. The origins and motivations behind these attacks remain unclear, prompting authorities to increase vigilance and investigate further.
As the investigation continues, the maritime community is urged to exercise caution and be aware of the potential risks associated with navigating these waters.
