French President Emmanuel Macron has raised alarms regarding an increase in hybrid attacks orchestrated by Russia against European nations, including France. Speaking at a press conference held at the Elysee Palace, Macron emphasized the necessity for the French government to devise strategic measures aimed at safeguarding critical infrastructure and key defense installations in light of this emerging threat.
In recent weeks, France has reportedly experienced a series of hybrid attacks attributed to Russian operatives, prompting Macron to declare that such aggressions would not go unanswered. Numerous leaders across Europe have expressed concerns that Russia may be gearing up for assaults intended to test the resolve of countries supporting Ukraine.
Recent Russian Attacks and European Security
During his address, Macron recalled a drone assault on Leipzig airport in Germany last month, which has been linked to Russian involvement. He also highlighted comments made by Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, who suggested that Russia might be plotting drone and missile attacks targeting Poland and other nations situated along NATO’s eastern frontier.
“In recent weeks, the Russian hybrid threat against Europeans and against France has intensified,” Macron stated firmly. He characterized the Russian strategy as one aimed at instilling fear and disrupting European support for Ukraine. However, he asserted that such intimidation would only serve to strengthen their commitment, as the security of Europe hinges on the situation in Ukraine.
Strategic Measures and International Cooperation
Macron further indicated that the French government has been charged with the responsibility of fortifying the protection of crucial infrastructure and the most vulnerable defense technology against potential drone and cyber threats. He also announced plans for an upcoming G7 meeting focused on energy issues, where discussions will include the status of gas reserves with the European Commission.
“In the coming weeks, we will convene a G7 meeting dedicated to these energy matters to bolster collaboration and mitigate any unnecessary frictions among G7 nations and our key partners,” Macron elaborated. He noted that this gathering would also provide a platform to explore the release or unlocking of strategic reserves, ensuring preparedness in the face of escalating tensions.
