During a recent event focused on artificial intelligence technology held in Lahore, Punjab’s Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz highlighted the province’s pressing security concerns, suggesting that the primary threats arise from neighboring provinces rather than from countries across its borders.
Maryam stressed, “The unfortunate reality is that the dangers we face in Punjab come less from my neighboring countries and more from our own provincial borders.” She underscored that terrorism often infiltrates Punjab from these adjacent regions, leading to heightened vigilance across the province.
Despite these challenges, the chief minister expressed gratitude for Punjab’s current safety levels, noting that it remains relatively secure amidst the threats it faces from various borders.
Improvements in Law and Order
CM Maryam pointed to significant advancements in the law enforcement landscape since her administration took office in 2024. She identified organized crime and growing religious intolerance as key issues affecting the province.
In her comments, she alluded to the banned organization Tehreek-i-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP), claiming that certain groups masquerade as religious entities while engaging in political activities that propagate hatred.
Maryam observed that religious gatherings now occur without incident, contrasting the current situation with the heightened religious polarization seen in previous years.
Technological Advancements in Security
Maryam emphasized Punjab’s status as the most AI-integrated province in the nation, revealing that her government has invested substantial resources in technology and security initiatives aimed at safeguarding its residents.
Upon taking office, she was alarmed to discover that terrorists were utilizing more advanced technology than the provincial authorities, including night-vision gear, to orchestrate their attacks. “Thanks to our efforts, we now have a comprehensive security system in place,” she declared.
Maryam further explained that bulletproof cameras have been installed to protect surveillance equipment from being targeted by attackers. The deployment of thermal imaging cameras and drones at checkpoints has also enhanced security measures throughout the province.
Addressing Past Violent Incidents
Reflecting on the history of violence in Punjab, she recounted that previous assaults on checkpoints had resulted in numerous fatalities—sometimes as many as ten lives lost in a single incident. Although such attacks continue to occur, she noted a marked decrease in casualties, attributing this improvement to ongoing investments in security infrastructure.
Maryam acknowledged that katcha areas, once notorious for terrorism and crime—including kidnappings—have seen a transformation due to collaborative efforts between the military, the Punjab government, and the Sindh government. “These areas have largely been cleansed of crime, and the authority of the state has been reinstated,” she asserted.
Commitment to Combat Corruption
In her speech, CM Maryam also addressed the issue of corruption, stating that she has recently made a decision to take decisive action against corrupt practices. She emphasized that this issue transcends government ranks, affecting the nation as a whole.
Maryam remarked, “We have become so accustomed to corruption that it has integrated into our daily lives.” To tackle this problem, her administration has implemented a system designed to ensure prompt action against corrupt individuals.
“A nation that loses faith in its government cannot progress,” she concluded, highlighting the importance of trust in governance as a foundation for the country’s advancement.
