In a tragic incident on Sunday, six individuals, including two officers, lost their lives during a gunfight in the Hangu district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, as reported by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).
The clash occurred between security forces and militants identified as Khwarij, resulting in the deaths of 23-year-old Captain Abuzar Farooq from Gujranwala and 22-year-old Lieutenant Sheraz Babar from Chakwal. Both officers were actively leading their troops in combat and displayed remarkable bravery before ultimately sacrificing their lives alongside four other personnel.
ISPR released images confirming that the fallen included three sepoys and one non-combatant. Meanwhile, the military reported that eight militants associated with the Indian-backed group Fitna al Khwarij were also eliminated during the confrontation.
Continuing Counterterrorism Efforts
Following the exchange of gunfire, a comprehensive operation was launched to ensure the safety of the region by eliminating any remaining terrorist threats. The ISPR emphasized that the ongoing counterterrorism strategy, known as ‘Azm-i-Istehkam’, would proceed vigorously, as endorsed by the Federal Apex Committee overseeing the National Action Plan.
The military’s communication underscored their steadfast commitment to protecting the nation against foreign-supported terrorism, reflecting on the sacrifices made by their soldiers.
This incident comes shortly after a devastating attack near a mosque in Kohat district, which resulted in the deaths of 23 individuals, including 17 police officers. In the wake of that attack, security forces successfully neutralized eight militants during a clearance operation.
Rising Security Concerns in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa
Recent data from the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS) indicates a rise in terrorist activities in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. In August alone, the region experienced a notable increase in attacks compared to July.
On August 7, a captain was martyred while seven militants were killed in a targeted operation in Hangu. Additionally, on July 30, a deputy superintendent of police was among nine officers killed during an assault on a police checkpost in the same district, prompting security forces to take swift action against the perpetrators.
