A catastrophic building collapse in the Gaza Strip has resulted in the tragic loss of at least 21 lives, including eight children, with many more feared missing. The incident occurred when a war-damaged structure in the Tal al-Hawa area of Gaza City gave way, according to local rescue teams and medical personnel.
Desperate Conditions Lead to Tragedy
Witnesses reported that the six-story building had been precariously leaning since it was damaged by an Israeli strike over a year ago. Despite its risky condition, displaced families had taken refuge there due to a lack of safer alternatives.
Rescue operations, joined by UN agencies and an Egyptian team, are ongoing but face significant delays because of a shortage of necessary equipment. Initial efforts by the Hamas-run Civil Defence involved rescuers digging with their hands, hoping to locate survivors beneath the debris.
Voices from the Rubble
Raed al-Dahshan, director of the Civil Defence in Gaza City, expressed hope as they continued to hear sounds from beneath the ruins. He emphasized that the scarcity of shelter options led families to inhabit the unsafe building, which ultimately collapsed while many were asleep.
Nearby residents like Umm Mohammed Bakrun recounted the terrifying moment of collapse, describing it as feeling “like an earthquake.” Another witness, Mansour Abu Mohammed, noted that the building’s condition had been visibly deteriorating, with stones frequently falling from it.
Urgent Need for Rescue Equipment
The head of the United Nations Development Programme in Gaza, Alessandro Mrakic, highlighted the dire situation, estimating that 70 to 100 individuals might be trapped under the rubble. He called for international support, stressing the lack of machinery and essential supplies required for effective rescue operations.
Mrakic also warned about the imminent danger posed by approximately 400 other war-damaged buildings in Gaza, especially with the approach of winter. The UN’s humanitarian relief coordinator, Ramiz Alakbarov, urged Israeli authorities to allow the delivery of heavy machinery and other vital supplies to aid the rescue efforts and support displaced populations.
Continued Conflict and Humanitarian Crisis
The broader humanitarian crisis in Gaza remains severe, exacerbated by ongoing Israeli airstrikes despite a ceasefire agreement from the previous October. The UN reports extensive damage to infrastructure, with a vast majority of structures either destroyed or compromised during the conflict between Israel and Hamas.
On a recent day, Israeli airstrikes resulted in the deaths of at least five Palestinians, including two children and a Hamas commander, further highlighting the ongoing volatility in the region. The conflict, which began following a Hamas-led attack on southern Israel in 2023, has led to significant casualties and displacement, with over 73,790 reported deaths in Gaza.
