An explosion at a military barracks in Bolivia has resulted in the loss of at least two lives, with officials expressing concerns that the death toll may rise. The incident occurred on Friday afternoon, approximately 30 kilometers from La Paz, in the town of Viacha.
According to Bolivian Defence Minister Ernesto Justiniano, the blast was triggered by the detonation of “pyrotechnic material” at the barracks, which houses an artillery regiment. At least 81 individuals sustained injuries due to the explosion, with four additional persons reported missing.
Details of the Incident
Health official Rita Nebraska, speaking to local media, indicated that the number of fatalities could be between 10 to 15 people, highlighting the severity of the situation. The explosion not only impacted military personnel but also affected nearby civilians, damaging numerous homes in the vicinity.
Emergency responders are currently engaged in search and rescue operations, sifting through debris in hopes of locating survivors. Nebraska warned of the possibility of further explosions and advised residents to maintain a safe distance of at least 150 meters from the military base.

Colonel Antonio Amaru, the base commander, reported that among the missing are a sergeant and 13 conscripted soldiers, all aged between 18 and 19 years. This tragic event has prompted a swift response from local and national authorities.
Bolivia’s President Rodrigo Paz extended his heartfelt condolences to the families of those affected, reaffirming the government’s commitment to conducting a thorough and transparent investigation into the cause of the explosion. In the meantime, local officials in Viacha have declared three days of mourning to honor the victims.
