Ukrposhta is no ordinary postal service. Aside from handling mail, it plays a crucial role in providing cash pensions, processing utility payments, and delivering essential food and medical supplies to Ukraine’s most vulnerable populations. In remote villages, where shops are scarce and traveling to cities is fraught with peril, this service is a lifeline.
Facing Constant Threats
The ongoing conflict has turned Ukrposhta into a target for Russian forces, which have intensified their attacks on postal workers and facilities. The Russian government claims these assaults are retaliatory measures against Ukrainian actions, such as those impacting Russian online retailers.
Smelyansky explains that failing to reach a village means depriving its residents of essential supplies, potentially forcing them to evacuate. However, traveling to these areas is fraught with risks, as unexpected arrivals might attract Russian drone strikes, while pre-announced visits risk information leaks from sympathizers.
Despite the dangers, Ukrposhta’s operations continue. The postal service has suffered significant losses, with hundreds of branches and vehicles damaged and over 50 employees killed since the war’s escalation in 2022.

Kateryna Marynych, a postmistress near Zaporizhzhia, embodies the resilience of Ukrposhta’s workforce. After losing her home and husband, she relocated to the area, where she ran a post office until it was destroyed by a Russian drone. Despite these hardships, she remains committed to her role, distributing cash and accepting payments from her van.
For many villagers, Kateryna is a crucial link to the outside world. Residents like Nadiia and Oleksandrivna rely on her for essential services, while others, like Mykola, find comfort in the social interactions her visits facilitate. Kateryna views her relationship with the community as familial, providing not just services but also emotional support.
Adapting to Escalating Challenges
