In recent developments, US President Donald Trump confirmed military actions against Iran, specifically targeting an anti-aircraft facility on Qeshm Island, located in the strategic Strait of Hormuz. This announcement was made during a phone interview with Fox News, where Trump described the operation as a “minor attack.”
Details of the Operation
The US military’s action on Qeshm Island was characterized as a limited and defensive measure. According to President Trump, the strike was executed shortly after Iran completed the construction of an anti-aircraft site. “They built an anti-aircraft facility… and we hit it last night very nicely,” he stated during his appearance on the Fox & Friends program.
Reports from the Wall Street Journal, which first disclosed the operation, suggest that the assault was intended to prevent Iran from gaining the capability to target commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz. This waterway remains a critical route for global oil shipments and has been a focal point since the onset of hostilities in February.
Iranian state media, IRNA, reported that residents on Qeshm Island witnessed five explosions and observed two aircraft in the area, corroborating the occurrence of the strike.
US-Israel Relations and Military Strategy
In the same interview, President Trump highlighted a significant policy shift concerning US financial support to Israel. He mentioned an agreement with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to cease the $3.8 billion annual security assistance to Israel by the end of the current year. “We’ve already agreed that by the end of this year we won’t be paying Israel. Now we’ll help Israel if they need it,” Trump elaborated.
This decision follows reports that Netanyahu was encouraging Trump to consider further military interventions against Iran post-midterm elections. Despite these pressures, the US President has expressed an interest in pursuing diplomatic solutions, possibly to avoid an escalation into full-scale conflict.
