In a recent statement, Asaduddin Owaisi, leader of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen (AIMIM), used the groundbreaking victory of Abdul El-Sayed in the Michigan Senate race to urge Muslims in Uttar Pradesh to amplify their political presence. El-Sayed’s win marks the first time a Muslim has been elected to the United States Senate from Michigan, a milestone that Owaisi believes carries significant implications for Muslims in India.
Owaisi’s Call for Stronger Political Identity
Reflecting on El-Sayed’s triumph, Owaisi addressed the Muslim community in Uttar Pradesh, where assembly elections are approaching, emphasizing the need for a more pronounced political identity. “An Abdul has won in Michigan; now the Abdul from Uttar Pradesh will have to strengthen his political identity,” Owaisi remarked on social media platform X. He criticized the derogatory use of the name ‘Abdul’ in political discourse, asserting that it is time for the community to assert its independence and dignity.
Owaisi’s comments come amidst ongoing accusations from AIMIM against the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and regional opposition parties like the Samajwadi Party, which he claims exploit Muslims as a vote bank without offering genuine representation. His statements seek to inspire Muslim voters in UP, who constitute nearly 20% of the electorate, to demand more from their political leaders.
Abdul El-Sayed’s Historic Victory
Abdul El-Sayed’s election to the US Senate was confirmed by American media after he defeated Republican Mike Rogers to take over from retiring Senator Gary Peters. El-Sayed, a medical administrator, celebrated his victory in Detroit, addressing his supporters with gratitude and pride. “Michigan, we did it,” he exclaimed, acknowledging the collective effort that led to his success.
Throughout the campaign, El-Sayed faced significant opposition, with Republican figures branding him a “communist” and a “terrorist”. Despite these challenges, he managed to garner widespread support, particularly from labor unions, by advocating for healthcare reform and campaign finance transparency. His campaign focused on ensuring that healthcare is accessible and affordable, resonating with voters across the political spectrum.
