Balkrishna Industries (BKT), an Indian tyre manufacturer, has teamed up with the renowned Italian firm, Pirelli, to produce Pirelli-branded passenger car tyres in India. The collaboration is marked by several agreements, including a framework and offtake agreement, along with a technical services contract. Although a definitive joint venture agreement is pending, plans are underway for a 50/50 partnership in a subsequent phase.
The collaboration aims to leverage Pirelli’s expertise in high-quality passenger car tyres alongside BKT’s robust manufacturing capabilities and industrial infrastructure within India. While Pirelli has established a commercial presence in the Indian market, it currently lacks a local manufacturing facility. On the other hand, BKT is well-known for its off-highway tyres, which are typically used in sectors like agriculture, mining, construction, and industrial applications. Recently, BKT has been diversifying its portfolio to include passenger car tyres, radial tyres for commercial vehicles, and two-wheeler tyres.
Details of the BKT-Pirelli Manufacturing Partnership
In the initial phase of this partnership, BKT is set to produce up to 800,000 Pirelli-branded passenger car radial tyres in India by the year 2030. These tyres will adhere to Pirelli’s stringent technical and quality specifications and will be distributed to Pirelli and its affiliates for sale both in India and in international markets. This initial manufacturing arrangement is expected to last until December 31, 2031, unless the formal joint venture can meet Pirelli’s requirements sooner. The agreement also stipulates minimum annual purchase commitments from Pirelli, matched by corresponding production capacity commitments from BKT.
Future Manufacturing Plans for High-Value Tyres
Looking ahead to the second phase, the proposed joint venture is planning to set up a dedicated manufacturing facility in India. This plant will focus on producing high-value passenger car tyres that will be marketed under both the Pirelli and BKT brands, catering to domestic and international customers alike. However, specifics regarding the proposed facility’s location, investment details, production capacity, and product lineup have yet to be disclosed.
The joint venture is anticipated to operate under a four-member board, with each company appointing two directors. Moreover, under a separate technical services agreement, Pirelli will assist BKT in developing passenger car, SUV, and two-wheeler tyres that will be marketed under the BKT brand. This collaboration will grant BKT access to Pirelli’s international testing facilities, proving grounds, and simulation technology.
Targeting the Expanding Premium Tyre Market in India
The collaboration between Pirelli and BKT is strategically aimed at tapping into the burgeoning demand for premium tyres within the Indian passenger vehicle sector. Both companies project that car registrations in India will increase by 5-7% annually until 2030, with the market for premium car tyres potentially expanding nearly five times during the same period.
