In a shocking incident aboard a Flydubai flight heading to Israel, the co-pilot reportedly attacked the captain with a crash axe in an effort to seize control of the aircraft, according to officials from the United Arab Emirates.
The flight, which had departed from Dubai with over 170 passengers onboard, experienced a dramatic descent of more than 17,000 feet (approximately 5,200 meters) about two and a half hours into the flight. Captain Smit Machchhar, who was injured during the assault, found himself on the cockpit floor as the aircraft began to lose altitude. Describing the harrowing moment, he recounted, “I told myself to go for one last push to open the door from inside.”
Thanks to the quick actions of passengers and on-duty crew members, they were able to subdue the assailant and safely land the plane. Typically, a crash axe is kept in the cockpit for emergency situations, and its use in this case has raised significant concerns.
Investigation Underway
The UAE attorney general has stated that ongoing investigations aim to uncover the full details surrounding the attack, including any underlying motives. Notably, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu identified the co-pilot as an Omani citizen. Netanyahu disclosed during an interview with Fox News that once subdued, the attacker allegedly shouted, “Kill me, kill me!”
This alarming statement suggests a potential suicidal intent on the part of the co-pilot, with Netanyahu indicating that it appears the individual may have planned to bring down the aircraft. Furthermore, he mentioned that the assailant had undergone radical Islamist indoctrination, prompting authorities to explore any possible links to terrorist activities.
Captain’s Condition and Recovery
Following the incident, Captain Machchhar was transported to a nearby medical facility and subsequently airlifted to Abu Dhabi, where he is reported to be in stable condition. The Indian embassy in the UAE has confirmed his health status, stating that he is recovering well.
Expressing optimism about his recovery, the captain stated, “I am confident that the recovery will be there and I will become fit and healthy again.” His determination reflects the resilience shown amidst such a distressing event.
