The United States has intensified its military actions against Iranian maritime assets, sinking one of five targeted oil tankers, as tensions with Tehran continue to rise. This move came in response to Iran’s recent attacks on an American warship, according to the United States Central Command (Centcom).
Strikes and Retaliation
In a series of coordinated strikes, US forces targeted four Iranian oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman, believed to be connected to the Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC). Another tanker was struck near Kharg Island, a critical oil terminal for Iran. In retaliation, Tehran launched missiles at a US military base in Jordan, where most were intercepted. Iran also claimed responsibility for attacks on two US vessels and eight oil tankers in the strategic Strait of Hormuz.
This ongoing exchange of military strikes has escalated over the past week, following an initial attack by the US and Israel on Iran in February. The tension has already impacted global oil markets, with Brent crude prices rising by 1.5% to $99.35 per barrel, and US oil climbing 1.3% to $94.23.
Military and Economic Implications
The Jordanian Armed Forces reported successfully shooting down 18 of the 20 Iranian missiles, with the remaining two landing harmlessly in uninhabited areas. The IRGC, undeterred, declared additional strikes against US and “non-compliant” vessels attempting to navigate the Strait of Hormuz.
Centcom confirmed that no US personnel were injured during the missile attacks, and emphasized that the targeted Iranian tankers were integral to a “multi-billion-dollar shadow network” that supports the IRGC financially. Among the damaged vessels, the M/T Riesco was confirmed sunk in the Gulf of Oman.
Regional Instability and Broader Impact
The conflict has further destabilized the region, with the Houthi movement in Yemen, backed by Iran, launching attacks on Saudi energy facilities. This escalation resulted in injuries to 73 individuals and caused temporary disruptions in oil operations due to fires at the targeted locations.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio remarked on the ongoing hostilities, stating that Iran’s attempts to target US naval ships would continue to lead to losses of their tankers. He underscored the straightforward nature of the US response during his visit to Colombia.
Technological Developments and Concerns
The US strikes followed Iran’s claim of seizing an unmanned American submarine in the Strait of Hormuz. Centcom spokesperson Captain Tim Hawkins clarified that the underwater drone had malfunctioned and was not equipped with sensitive or classified technology. The drone was reportedly used for surveying regional waters in support of military operations.
