The Fitzroy River, which is known to be inhabited by approximately 500 saltwater crocodiles, has officially been selected as the venue for the rowing and canoeing competitions during the upcoming 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Brisbane.
This decision follows a comprehensive technical evaluation that assessed the river’s suitability for hosting such events. Interestingly, the assessment did not take the presence of crocodiles into account. Instead, it focused on various factors such as the river’s performance under different weather conditions, water levels, and the potential risks of flooding both during the Games and in the lead-up to them.
The evaluation was commissioned by the Games Independent Infrastructure and Coordination Authority (GIICA). They acknowledged that the Fitzroy River Flatwater Facility is already an established venue for flatwater sports, hosting local championships, regattas, and national training camps.
Support from International Governing Bodies
Both World Rowing and Paddle Worldwide, the latter formerly known as the International Canoe Federation, have granted their endorsement to the Fitzroy River course. World Rowing President Jean-Christophe Rolland expressed confidence in the venue, stating that the thorough analysis conducted assures fair competition conditions during the Games for both Olympic and Paralympic rowing events.
Thomas Konietzko, President of Paddle Worldwide, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing that the depth of technical work undertaken has enhanced their confidence in the venue’s capacity to provide a fair competition environment for canoe sprint athletes.
Addressing Concerns about Crocodiles
Last year, Brisbane 2032 President Andrew Liveris downplayed the concerns related to the crocodiles. He likened the situation to surfing in the ocean despite the presence of sharks, urging a shift in mindset towards a more positive outlook. His comments were made in the context of promoting a “can do” attitude regarding the hosting of the Games.
Following the recent approval of the venue, Liveris remarked that this endorsement adds certainty as the planning progresses for the Games, ensuring that all forthcoming design and operational activities remain focused on Rockhampton.
Saltwater crocodiles, commonly referred to as “Salties,” are known to inhabit both freshwater and saltwater environments and can grow to lengths exceeding six meters.
