A dramatic incident unfolded on a Flydubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv when one pilot attacked the other in an attempt to seize control of the aircraft. This led to the plane plummeting over 17,000 feet in less than two minutes. Fortunately, passengers and crew managed to overpower the attacker, allowing the plane to land safely.
Passengers’ Harrowing Experience
Among the passengers was Adam Polovincik, who recounted the terrifying moments to BBC Newshour. Traveling with his wife and children after a vacation in Singapore and Thailand, Polovincik described holding his young children close, attempting to maintain a calm demeanor despite the chaos. “You just tell them everything’s going to be all right,” he explained, trying to reassure them amidst the panic.
Polovincik praised the bravery of the crew and passengers who subdued the attacker, calling them “true heroes.” The pilot who was injured in the attack is currently stable in the hospital, while the suspect has been detained.
Flight Diverted Safely
Following the incident, the flight was diverted to Saudi Arabia, where the passengers, mostly Israeli, were treated with kindness and provided with refreshments. Polovincik noted the generosity of the Saudi authorities, despite the lack of diplomatic ties between Israel and Saudi Arabia.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu commented on the situation, stating that it was premature to confirm any involvement from Iran but noted that the suspect had been exposed to “Islamist radical indoctrination.”
Commendable Actions and Aftermath
Passenger Yaniv Hayun played a crucial role in subduing the attacker, alongside other passengers who helped restrain him. Two additional pilots on board took command of the aircraft, ensuring its safe landing.
Polovincik expressed immense gratitude to the Indian pilot, Capt Smit Machchhar, whose actions were pivotal in regaining control of the plane. “Without him, we’re probably not speaking here right now,” he stated, highlighting the critical role played by the pilot and others involved.
Once the ordeal was over, the passengers were flown to Tel Aviv on another flight, where they were met with a warm reception. The incident, however, left a lasting impact on Polovincik and his family, marking a distressing conclusion to their otherwise wonderful holiday.
