Grindr, the leading dating application for the LGBTQ+ community, has come to an agreement to pay £26 million to resolve a lawsuit alleging that it improperly disclosed users’ personal details, including their HIV statuses, to outside parties.
This legal action was initially filed in the High Court in 2024, claiming that Grindr had mishandled sensitive user information. The lawsuit evolved into a class action in the United States, where over 11,000 individuals joined the case, according to the law firm managing the proceedings.
As part of the settlement, Grindr will distribute the £26 million in two separate payments of £13 million each. The company clarified that this settlement does not constitute an admission of wrongdoing. It emphasized that the allegations pertain to past data handling practices that occurred before 2020, during its ownership by the Chinese company Kunlun.
