Hafidh Ameir Hassan, the husband of Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan, has sadly passed away at a hospital in Zanzibar. His death was confirmed by Vice-President Deogratius Ndejembi, who revealed that Ameir had been battling a heart condition prior to his demise.
The announcement was made earlier today, with the Vice-President stating that Ameir succumbed to his illness at 08:00 local time (06:00 GMT) at the Emilio Mzena Memorial Hospital. Plans for his funeral are currently in progress in Kizimkazi, a village located on the semi-autonomous island of Zanzibar.
Ameir, an academic in the agricultural field, maintained a relatively private life, despite being the first gentleman of Tanzania since his wife assumed office in 2021.
Tributes and Condolences
Following the announcement of his passing, numerous leaders expressed their heartfelt condolences. Vice-President Ndejembi led the tributes, reaching out to President Samia and offering support to her family and friends during this trying time.
Kenyan President William Ruto expressed his sorrow via social media, noting that President Samia lost a lifelong companion while her children mourn the loss of a devoted father. Ruto emphasized that Tanzania has lost a remarkable individual.
Zambia’s President Hakainde Hichilema and Burundi’s President Évariste Ndayishimiye also shared their sympathies, standing in solidarity with the first family and the nation of Tanzania, wishing them strength and comfort in their grief.
Ameir’s Life and Legacy
Throughout his time as First Gentleman, Hafidh Ameir Hassan was rarely seen in the public eye alongside President Samia. Their appearances together were mostly limited to official functions. The couple wed in 1978, prior to Samia’s entry into national politics.
Ameir and Samia were parents to four children: three sons and a daughter. Their daughter, Wanu Hafidh Ameir, has followed her parents into public service, currently serving as a member of Zanzibar’s House of Representatives in the National Assembly.
