Electric vehicle sales in India reached a record high in September 2026, with 35,995 units sold, marking an impressive 94 percent increase from the previous year. This milestone represents the fourth month in a row where sales have surpassed the 30,000-unit mark, showcasing the growing popularity of electric vehicles in the country.
Tata Motors Leads the Charge
Continuing its dominance in the electric vehicle market, Tata Motors sold 14,769 units, securing a 41 percent market share. This is a significant 101 percent increase from September 2025, when the company sold 7,353 units. The Nexon EV remains a key contributor to Tata’s sales, alongside the Tiago EV and Punch EV. Tata also expanded its Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) offering to various models, including the Nexon EV, Curvv EV, Sierra EV, and Harrier EV.
Mahindra and JSW MG Motor Follow
Mahindra secured the second position with 7,779 units sold, reflecting a 96 percent increase from the previous year. Despite not surpassing its July record of 8,131 units, Mahindra maintained a strong market presence with a 21.61 percent share. The BE 6 and XEV 9e models continue to be popular among consumers.
JSW MG Motor remained in third place with 5,242 units sold, a modest 9 percent increase from the previous year. Their market share, however, decreased from 25.91 percent in September 2025 to 14.56 percent. The Windsor EV continues to be a top seller, complemented by the new Hector Tomahawk EV.
Kia’s Impressive Growth
Kia emerged in fifth place, surpassing Maruti Suzuki, with 1,263 units sold, marking a 111 percent increase from September 2025. This growth is attributed to the launch of the Syros EV and existing models like the Carens Clavis EV. Kia’s market share increased to 3.50 percent.
Maruti Suzuki and Other Players
Maruti Suzuki fell to sixth place, selling 1,103 units of the e Vitara, a 25 percent drop from August. The decline is partly due to a focus on exports, though plans are in place to boost domestic production at the new Hansalpur plant in Gujarat.
BYD and Hyundai also saw growth, with BYD selling 836 units, up 14 percent, and Hyundai selling 792 units, up 96 percent from the previous year. Toyota recorded 218 units of the Urban Cruiser Ebella, marking its highest monthly sales since launch.
Luxury EV Market Sees Record Sales
The luxury electric vehicle market also experienced a surge, reaching 975 units sold, a 60 percent increase from the previous year. BMW led the segment with 502 units, while Tesla followed with 291 units, marking a 322 percent increase year-on-year.
Mercedes-Benz, Volvo, and Porsche also contributed to the luxury segment, with varying degrees of growth, showcasing a broadening interest in high-end electric vehicles.
