The recent violence in Kohat represents a disturbing intensification of attacks on Pakistani soil. On Friday, an explosive-laden vehicle was detonated at a mosque situated in the old Police Lines area, resulting in a chaotic attempt to breach police facilities nearby.
In this brutal incident, at least 23 individuals lost their lives, including 17 members of the police force, while over 100 were injured. However, the police and security personnel swiftly regrouped and launched a courageous counterattack, managing to neutralize almost all of the attackers within hours of the bombing. The final two assailants were dealt with during a thorough clean-up operation that extended into the night, overseen by senior police and counterterrorism leaders. One attacker was killed, while the other detonated explosives, choosing death over capture.
Heroism Amidst Chaos
This operation showcased remarkable bravery, particularly from the additional inspector-general of the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD), who, despite suffering injuries from a grenade, returned to aid in the clean-up efforts.
The nation grieves for the victims and extends prayers for the injured, while also clamoring for justice for those who have lost their loved ones. The perpetrators of this attack, who targeted worshippers during a sacred time for Muslims, have displayed a complete disregard for human life and ethical boundaries.
Threats from Terrorist Groups
The Ittehadul Mujahideen, an alliance of various terrorist factions, has claimed responsibility for the attack. According to the Jamestown Foundation, this group is believed to operate from secure locations across the border, collaborating on intelligence and coordinating attacks while also orchestrating digital campaigns. Their use of drone technology in previous operations has made them a significant threat, possibly more sophisticated than the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).
It is crucial to recognize the seriousness of this threat and respond accordingly. The police in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) require improved equipment and training to confront an adversary that increasingly employs advanced technology to inflict harm. Adequate support in terms of resources, tactics, and technology is essential to enable them to effectively combat and mitigate these ongoing threats.
Need for Policy Reassessment
In addition to improving police capabilities, a comprehensive review of the current strategies to counter violent extremism is necessary. The national counterterrorism policy needs an overhaul, particularly in its diplomatic, political, and social dimensions, which must be tackled in unison to yield enduring stability.
Regrettably, the public’s focus has shifted towards pressing social, political, and economic issues, relegating the terrorism crisis to a secondary concern in national discussions. Pakistan must confront these extremist networks decisively, but effective action can only be taken once internal issues are adequately addressed.
