The mayor of Kyiv, Vitaliy Klitschko, has issued a grave warning regarding the escalating Russian strikes that are inflicting severe damage on Ukraine’s capital. He described the current circumstances as a “very dramatic situation,” emphasizing that the assaults are compromising critical infrastructure, logistics, and housing within the city.
This alarming statement followed a crisis meeting of Kyiv’s defense council, convened after renewed attacks on a vital bridge caused significant traffic disruption. In addition to the bridge, data centers in the city have also been targeted, leading to widespread internet outages.
President Vladimir Putin claimed that these military actions are a reaction to Ukraine’s strikes on Russian energy facilities, despite the fact that Russia initiated such attacks first. Klitschko underscored the urgency of the situation, stating, “We’re talking about survival” during the defense council meeting, which included top officials from the military, security, and emergency services. He remarked that the strategy behind the assaults is to instill fear among the populace, but he expressed confidence that the city would emerge resilient through collective effort.
Recent Attacks and Their Impact
Just hours prior to Klitschko’s remarks, the Pivdennyi (Southern) bridge in Kyiv was struck by Russian drones, marking the fourth attack in just two days. This bridge serves as a crucial transport link across the Dnipro River, which separates the western and eastern sections of the city. The repeated assaults have led to a suspension of all metro and automobile traffic across this key artery, causing extensive delays throughout Kyiv.
Furthermore, the situation is exacerbated by restrictions on the city’s other major bridges. With an estimated population of three million, many residents depend heavily on the metro system for transportation. Tragically, the violence has resulted in casualties, including one fatality when a multi-storey residential building was struck during the nighttime attacks.
Responses from Ukrainian Leadership
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has pointed out that Putin’s aggressive tactics have escalated since early September, indicating that the Kremlin operates under the notion that “there are no rules now” when conducting operations against Ukraine. In an interview with the Financial Times, Zelensky remarked on the intensity of the attacks, stating, “The Russians have failed to occupy us. So now they are carrying out massive attacks and mass killings.” He highlighted the Russian strategy to target essential infrastructure, including bridges, data centers, and educational institutions, with the intent of displacing citizens from their homes.
In a recent address, Putin defended the attacks on Ukrainian economic targets as a direct reaction to Ukraine’s assaults on Russian oil refineries and maritime assets. He stated, “Now from every direction we’re receiving calls ‘let’s stop.’ But they started it,” during a speech at the Valdai foreign policy forum. Putin acknowledged that Ukraine’s strikes had yielded some results, noting a 1% loss in Russia’s GDP, while Ukraine contends that its targeting of Russian oil infrastructure is a necessary measure to hinder the Kremlin’s war financing.
