In an extraordinary tale reminiscent of a Bollywood movie, two women who grew up as best friends in the Netherlands have discovered they are actually biological sisters. Meena Geltink and Minal Tijssen, both in their 40s, were adopted as infants from separate orphanages in Mumbai, India, and raised by different families in close proximity to one another.
The Unexpected Discovery
Their friendship began in their teenage years when they met at an event organized by the adoption agency their parents used. Instantly drawn to each other by their striking resemblance and similar mannerisms, they exchanged contact details and maintained a close relationship over the years, often calling each other “Sis.” Despite the lack of any known blood relation, their bond was undeniable.
However, life took them on different paths, and they lost touch 15 years ago. Meena became a mother, while Minal moved to France. It wasn’t until a chance DNA test in 2017 that Meena considered the possibility of a biological connection, but no matches surfaced at the time.
A Facebook Message Changes Everything
In a surprising turn of events, Minal reached out to Meena on Facebook in May, sparking a chain of revelations. Minal had taken a DNA test while visiting her parents in the Netherlands, and the results showed a perfect match with Meena. Overwhelmed with emotion, Meena reinstalled the DNA app to confirm the results, discovering that they indeed shared the same biological parents.
The revelation was both shocking and exhilarating for the sisters. “It was like I had an adrenaline shot,” Meena described. “Minal was my missing puzzle piece.”
A Joyous Reunion
The sisters finally met in person on a sunny day in August, marking their first meeting since learning of their familial ties. Their reunion was filled with tears, laughter, and a profound sense of homecoming. “For years, Minal and I had felt a big hole in our hearts. We feel like we’ve been completed,” Meena expressed.
Since reconnecting, Meena and Minal have integrated their families, sharing time with each other’s spouses, children, and parents. Despite the initial shock, they continue to marvel at their similarities, from finishing each other’s sentences to their shared mannerisms.
Looking Back and Moving Forward
Reflecting on their journey, Meena shared her desire to return to Mumbai with Minal, to walk through the streets where their story began. “There were times when we both felt very lonely,” she said, regretting the lost moments they could have shared.
Now, as they rebuild their connection, the sisters are grateful for the chance to fill the voids in each other’s lives, cherishing the newfound completeness they feel together.
