In a recent announcement, the Directorate General of Immigration and Passports (DGIP) revealed that passport collection counters will be operational on Saturdays from 8 AM to 4 PM for a duration of two months. This initiative aims to provide greater convenience for citizens needing to collect their passports.
The notice, which has been published on the DGIP’s official website and disseminated via social media platforms, encourages individuals to retrieve their passports without delay. It specifically targets those who might find it challenging to visit during standard working hours.
Important Guidelines for Passport Collection
Citizens are reminded that any passports that remain unclaimed for a period of six months will be disposed of, in accordance with established government policies. This underscores the importance of timely collection to avoid losing one’s passport.
Earlier in July, the DGIP initiated a collaboration with the logistics and courier service TCS to introduce a new service titled “Passport Aapki Dehleez Par,” which facilitates home delivery of passports. This move is part of the department’s broader strategy to enhance accessibility and efficiency in passport services.
Transition to E-Passports
In a related development, the government announced plans to completely phase out machine-readable passports in favor of e-passports. According to Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, this transition is expected to significantly reduce instances of passport fraud and forgery.
DGIP Director General Muhammad Ali Randhawa emphasized that these measures reflect the department’s ongoing commitment to improving the passport service experience for all citizens.
