ISLAMABAD: On Thursday, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif arrived in London, where he will spend two days before heading to the United States for the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York.
A representative from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) indicated that PM Sharif is scheduled to depart for the US on Saturday to participate in the UNGA session.
The source also mentioned that the Prime Minister is anticipated to return to Pakistan on either September 27 or 28, with another brief stopover in London planned for one or two days. “Given the lengthy journey from Pakistan to the US, PM Shehbaz chose to take a break in London,” the source explained.
UNGA Participation and Expectations
According to the Foreign Office, Prime Minister Shehbaz is set to deliver a speech at the UN General Assembly on September 25.
During the UN session, he is expected to engage in various bilateral discussions with global leaders and take part in high-level events.
Alongside him, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, along with other federal ministers and senior officials, will accompany the Prime Minister during his time in New York.
Pakistan’s Position on Global Issues
The Prime Minister’s agenda includes presenting Pakistan’s viewpoint on both regional and international matters, emphasizing the nation’s priorities during the UNGA.
This year’s official theme for the 81st session is “Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations That Delivers for All,” and the discussions are scheduled to take place from September 22 to 26, with the final sitting occurring on September 28.
Amidst these discussions, the ongoing tensions between Washington and Tehran are expected to be a significant topic among world leaders, particularly regarding security in the Strait of Hormuz, regional stability, and potential diplomatic resolutions to the conflict.
PM Shehbaz is likely to underscore Pakistan’s commitment to finding a peaceful resolution to the ongoing US-Iran tensions.
