Ed Sheeran’s US tour is facing turbulence as all remaining support acts have withdrawn their participation following Macklemore’s removal from the lineup. This decision came after the rapper made pro-Palestinian statements during his performance, leading to his exclusion.
Artists Stand in Solidarity
Among those who chose to leave the tour are Finneas, brother of Billie Eilish, Irish singer-songwriter Aaron Rowe, and Danish band Lukas Graham. Irish folk band Beoga, known for performing with Sheeran, also opted out.
Finneas expressed his stance via a statement, emphasizing that artists should not be silenced for speaking out against oppression. Meanwhile, Lukas Graham voiced similar sentiments on Instagram, stressing the importance of discussing the impact of war on civilians and children.
Sheeran’s Position on the Matter
Ed Sheeran clarified his position, stating that Macklemore’s removal was not his decision but that of the tour promoters, Messina Touring Group. He highlighted that he had attempted to mediate with the venues but ultimately respected the promoters’ decision.
While Sheeran expressed his dismay over the Israel-Palestine conflict, he explained his choice to keep political discourse separate from his professional platform, noting the diverse audience he attracts.
Macklemore’s Controversial Statements
The controversy began when Macklemore, during a concert in New Jersey, called for a “free Palestine” and showed images of Gaza’s devastation. His remarks attracted criticism from Jewish groups, prompting some venues to pressure the tour promoters to drop him.
Despite the backlash, Macklemore addressed his audience, clarifying that his criticism was not aimed at Jewish people but at the broader political situation.
Reactions and Consequences
Robert Kraft, owner of Gillette Stadium, confirmed his decision to bar Macklemore, accusing the rapper of promoting divisive rhetoric. The tour promoter stated that several venues had refused Macklemore’s performance, threatening the tour’s continuation.
Macklemore acknowledged the difficult situation Sheeran faced but criticized him for not taking a definitive stance. He reflected that despite losing opportunities, his efforts to highlight the Palestinian cause made the tour impactful.
