The trial of Beaumont Lamarre-Condon, a former police officer charged with the murders of a Sydney couple, commenced recently in Sydney. Prosecutors have described the motive for the alleged double homicide as stemming from a “jealous infatuation” that Lamarre-Condon had for his ex-partner, Jesse Baird.
Lamarre-Condon, 31, has entered a not guilty plea to two counts of murder connected to domestic violence and one charge of aggravated break and enter. The case centers around the deaths of 26-year-old TV presenter Jesse Baird and his new partner, Luke Davies, aged 29, who worked as a flight attendant for Qantas. Their remains were discovered in surfboard bags in a rural area approximately 200 kilometers from Sydney.
Details of the Allegations
During the opening statements of the trial, prosecutor Brett Hatfield SC outlined the events leading up to the tragic incident. He characterized Lamarre-Condon’s behavior as obsessive, claiming that his fixation on Baird intensified after their brief romantic relationship ended in November 2023. Hatfield alleged that Lamarre-Condon engaged in stalking behaviors, including sending messages from a friend’s phone under false pretenses and tampering with Baird’s vehicle.
On the day in question, it is alleged that Lamarre-Condon set an early alarm and communicated with a friend about his intentions, indicating a premeditated plan. He reportedly disguised himself as an Uber Eats driver and waited outside Baird’s residence for several hours before executing the alleged murders.
Execution of the Crimes
According to the prosecution, after gaining entry to Baird’s home using a key he had previously acquired, Lamarre-Condon shot Baird in the kitchen. He then allegedly confronted and killed Davies in the bedroom while the latter attempted to contact emergency services, effectively silencing him as a potential witness.
Hatfield emphasized that Lamarre-Condon not only planned the murder of Baird but also sought to eliminate Davies to prevent him from testifying. In the aftermath of the killings, he allegedly attempted to obscure the evidence, including sending messages from Baird’s phone to mislead investigators.
Previous Incidents and Arrest
In addition to the murder charges, Lamarre-Condon faces an aggravated break and enter charge from an incident in August 2023, during which he is accused of breaking into Baird’s home and stealing personal items. Prior to the trial, it was revealed that he had proposed a guilty plea for manslaughter concerning Baird’s death, which was rejected by the prosecution.
The police first became aware of the potential murders when items belonging to Baird and Davies, stained with blood, were discovered in a bin in southern Sydney. Shortly after this discovery, Lamarre-Condon voluntarily turned himself in to law enforcement and was subsequently charged. The couple’s bodies were located approximately eight days after the alleged murders.
In the wake of the charges, Lamarre-Condon was dismissed from his position with the New South Wales Police. A jury of 15 members was selected for the trial, exceeding the typical 12-member jury to account for possible absences.
