Flight operations at Catania International Airport, a key airport in Italy, have been halted due to volcanic ash emitted from Mount Etna. This disruption marks the second instance in a few months where activities at this busy airport have been affected by the eruptions of Europe’s highest active volcano.
Authorities at the airport announced that all incoming and outgoing flights were suspended starting Monday, with operations set to be paused until 22:00 local time on Tuesday. The ongoing volcanic activity prompted the INGV Etneo Observatory to issue a red alert for aviation on the same day.
On Tuesday, Catania airport, which ranks as the fifth-busiest in Italy in terms of passenger traffic, communicated on its website that further updates would be provided. Passengers scheduled to fly from Catania were advised to consult their airlines for the latest information before heading to the airport.
Impact of Mount Etna’s Eruptions
Typically, Catania International Airport accommodates around 12 million passengers annually. However, it faced a closure of nearly a week last month during the height of the summer season due to similar volcanic disturbances. The proximity of the airport to Mount Etna has led to discussions about the need for enhanced safety measures and possibly expanding other facilities within Sicily.
Mount Etna, which rises to 3,324 meters (10,906 feet), is situated approximately 40 kilometers (25 miles) from the airport. While the ash clouds have caused significant interruptions in air traffic, the recent eruptions have also attracted many visitors eager to view the volcanic activity firsthand, with around 1.5 million people visiting the site each year.
