A prominent police officer in South Africa has been formally charged with serious sexual offenses during a court appearance held in a location situated northwest of Johannesburg.
Lieutenant General Shadrack Sibiya, who is currently suspended from his position as deputy police commissioner, stands accused of grooming a minor, specifically a 16-year-old girl, and raping an adult woman aged 18. In addition to these allegations, he faces a trafficking charge which may lead to further arrests connected to this case.
Having been arrested on Monday, the 59-year-old Sibiya has not made any public statements regarding the charges against him. His next court date is scheduled for September 29, where he will pursue a bail application, although prosecutors are anticipated to contest this request. Furthermore, the state has asked for a change in the correctional facility where Sibiya is currently held, due to indications that he might attempt to escape, as reported by SABC, a national broadcasting organization.

During the proceedings, allegations were made that Sibiya received a gift of 20 impalas from a suspected crime lord in exchange for a police contract. He has categorically denied these claims, which have added to the ongoing concerns regarding the integrity of the police force.
